The Piggie Got Me Down

+1 Randomness

pig fluIt’s bound to happen to all of us at some point, and I lost the good fight a week and half ago. While  I’m finally on the uptake, my goodness, this one does hang on. Yes, there will be a few less Miscelaney posts until I finely kick this bug in entirety and start to feel inspired again, but in the meantime (should it help any of you), a few tips (obvious or otherwise) for helping you through the misery:

1) Plenty of Rest–no magic pill here, you’ve got to calm it down for a few weeks. And really, you are not going to have the energy, but save yourself from having to cancel on people…just don’t schedule anything you don’t have to for at least 14 days from time of your first fever spike. Sadly, this means your workout routine will go in the toilet for the time being.

2) Liquids, Liquids, Liquids–You’ll find that’s really all you are craving at first…particulalry the sugary, fruit drinks. If you can, mix up your hydration efforts with low calorie vitamin-enhanced drinks or add hydration tablets to your water.

Sickie’s TIP: Consider Coconut water. It will provide a needed boost in potassium and is a better choice than the sugar-laden alternatives.

3 ) Mama was Right–Take a page from those who know and opt for light, frequent meals in the beginning. Warm, nourishing soups like ye ‘old Chicken Noodle will be your best friend. Light fruits and vegetables are also a good choice as they are more easily digested than heavy, large meals.

Sickie’s TIP: Buy classic canned Chicken Noodle soup and add fresh rotisserie chicken, fresh spinach and a bit more chicken broth with additional water to make this feel a little more home-made without all the effort (c’mon, you are SICK, you should be resting!)

4 ) Steaming–Try breathing “a steam” of 100% Eucalyptus oil (can be found in any health food store.) Eucalyptus has antibacterial qualities.facial steam (Use a few drops of oil, steam water in pot over stove, ”tent” your head with a towel, breathe deeply)

5 ) Gargling– A simple solution of hot water with salt gargle relieves a sore throat  (note: Celtic Sea Salt is your best choice due to more minerals).

6 ) If All Else Fails…Two words: Thera Flu (the type you drink in a mug)–I know this is a sell-out for better living through chemistry,  but if your head is splitting, body is aching and you are close to tears because you feel soooo bad yet have to pull it together to be somewhere, this is your best bet in my humble opinion. Chances are you will be a little “jacked up” on the decongestant part, so don’t plan on being totally lucid while you are taking it.

Yeah, nothing you didn’t already really know, right? Sadly, you’ve just got to let your body fight it on it’s own. So do yourself a favor and if you do contract it, be kind to yourself and your immune system so it can kick it sooner rather than later.
